Top 10 Best Barber Shops in Los Angeles

By Rich Krafting

Updated:

Whether you’re a newcomer, visitor, or Los Angeles native, you want to be looking your best. Here are the best barber shops in Los Angeles based on the number, ranking, and content of Yelp reviews. We’re not counting down from highest to lowest because all these shops are all top notch and very different in character so keep reading to find the right one for you.

Bolt Barbers

3.5 stars – 254 reviews

People either love or hate (and sometimes love to hate) Bolt Barbers. They proudly fly a “People hate us on Yelp” flag and respond to negative reviews in kind. With three shops, including the LA flagship, West Hollywood Monkey House (go see Richie the Barber), and Las Vegas Monkey Train, there’s plenty of love. They’re known for precision cuts, “this isn’t a salon” attitude, vintage games, and icy cold root beer. Bolt is also open later than most barbers and has a Vintage Mobile Shop available for parties.

Bolt Barbers is a modern twist on the old school barbershops…The barbershop is nice and has all the things most men would want/need to be comfortable leading up to their haircut. They’ve got shuffleboard, free beverages, a variety of magazines (they even have some with just pictures for those that find words complicated), good music, and interesting lively people to talk to.

I highly recommend Bolt Barbers. It’s a really cool spot full of very friendly people who know how to give a good haircut. – Ernesto A.

I always schedule my haircut on Saturday or Sunday mornings with Phil. A couple of perks to doing this:

1. Fresh cup of coffee when you walk in.
2. Phil’s chair faces a 60 inch TV… Football/basketball game always on Sat/Sun morning
3. It’s a little bit less crowded then when I go in during the week.

In general this place is one of the coolest barber shops I’ve been to. Phil does a great job of cutting hair, and he’s a cool guy. I contemplated giving it 4 stars instead of 5 just because it’s a little pricey at $30/cut. But I seriously think it’s worth it for the experience. Also, you get a straight edge neck shave after and they have these massaging machines after your done. It’s pretty awesome.

If your willing to spend the extra $10 over what you would have spent at some crappy barber, go to Bolt. – Bryan P.

Rudy’s Barbershop

3.5 stars – 312 reviews

The goal of Rudy’s  Barbershop founders Alex Calderwood, David Peterson, and Wade Weigel was to establish not just a barber shop but an experience. This is a place with atmosphere, art, music, and community that also offers a great haircut at a great price and it’s not exclusive to men.

Since opening in 1993, Rudy’s has 18 locations in Seattle, Portland, and New York, including 4 stores across Los Angeles. The majority of negative feedback is about wait times, which is the downside of the popularity that accompanies excellence.

I saw Rudy’s a bunch of times while I was looking for a good barbershop. I finally went in after two other barbershops and was out in Amelia’s chair. This is the best haircut I have ever had. No joke, I have thick crazy hair and a very large full beard, however she took her time and was a perfectionist with every scissor cut or razor shave. I highly recommend going to Amelia, and she’s also great company while she cuts! Cheers – Anthony D.

So I went in yesterday for a haircut with my USUAL and FAVORITE stylist Kenny! He killed it yet again. My hipsterification process is renewed with him every 2 weeks. Not only is he courteous, but we have great conversations, and his haircutting skills/techniques are legendary! – Danny H.

Baxter Finley Barber & Shop

4 stars – 109 reviews

Baxter Finley is the Barber & Shop associated with the high quality Baxter of California men’s grooming products. Go straight to the source for contemporary or classic styles or an ultra close shave. Their rating is brought down by negative reviews about scheduling, attitude, and customer service, which seems to be hit or miss. One thing everyone can agree on is that the vintage decor is exceptional.

[new_royalslider id=”44″]

I recently switched barbers due to my last barber messing up my hair and I cannot be happier with Victor at Baxter Finley! I’ve been using Baxter pomades for years but only recently found out about their shop in West Hollywood and I’m glad I did.

Victor took his time to listen to me and understand what it was I really wanted to do to my hair and he cut accordingly to my hair’s texture and style. He was so impressively precise and took a good amount of time on my hair and I loved it!

The shop is very old school classic style with amazing decor! I always want to snap a picture every time I go by and it’s super convenient since I use Baxter products I grab a pomade on every visit. – Harout S.

Straight up old school barber shop with a modern edge. It all starts with the guys, and today I was disappointed to learn that a newbie was assigned to me on my walk in.

I shouldn’t have had any worries. This kid was brilliant, pulled off a classic undercut with absolute precision that was perfect for my head and finished it off with a great straight razor neck shave.

Grabbed some new pomade on my way out and will be back in four weeks to keep my hair going in the right direction. Glad I found this place, happy to come back for (hopefully) a long while. – Bo S.

The Proper Barbershop

4 stars – 111 reviews

The Proper combines the best of classic and modern in a masculine, easy-going, and fun-loving atmosphere. Enjoy the lounge with a beer, X-Box, or movie while you wait for your cut, shave, or beard grooming. Like many of the barbershops with a distinct personality, the attitude and atmosphere appeals to some and repels others. Rent them for parties or to get everyone in top top shape for weddings.

[new_royalslider id=”48″]

This is an LA gem for great gentleman’s haircuts. Dapper, proper, everyone there is super chill and they all take their cuts seriously and without a doubt you get what you pay for. Good vibe and you walk out of there feeling like a boss with the slick pomade greased back. Mike, Kyle, Dylan, everyone there is exemplary. – David R.

There are a few things people have to realize before they come to The Proper. There is a very distinct culture within the Proper that may turn some people away. It’s definitely not your typical. The barbers here banter a lot. They play games, sit around, and talk a lot of smack. That being said, they somehow manage to do all this while giving you perfect cuts 100% of the time. Sure this may not be how “a business should be run” but really…who cares? These guys are damn good at what they do, which is cut hair and trim beards, not to pamper you with sweet talk. – Chris C.

This is a great place with a great atmosphere. The guys here really know what they are doing. They cut hair like I have never seen before. Regardless of whether you want your beard trimmed or a nice fade, they do it best. Come here and expect to be treated kindly because all of the guys have great attitudes. I will never step foot in another barbershop again. – Emile A.

Sweeney Todd’s Barber Shop

4 stars – 143 reviews

Formerly Andy’s Barbershop, Sweeney Todd’s owner Sween Lahman restored the shop to it’s original 1950s glory. It continues to specialize in precision haircuts and shaves and has been known for a retro soundtrack, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nat King Cole. The space is also available for after hours bachelor parties, complete with a projector and vintage stag movies.

[new_royalslider id=”45″]

– GREAT hair cut.
– Awesome ambience.
– Attention to detail is every way. – Michael S.

I get that some people are in a hurry and can’t take a few hours out of their day to do something, you know, relaxing.

Sweeney’s isn’t for you. Most of the patrons here are going not just for the cut but for the experience. The guys talk because…they are people. With personalities. The barbers take interest in the lives of their regulars and vice versa. They aren’t hair cutting robots and when they need a break I don’t begrudge them that.

They also take their time cutting hair because…they are damn good at it. A good hair cut shouldn’t take ten minutes. I can’t tell you how many times I thought Rudy or Sweeney were done cutting my hair only to take one more look, decide something was a little off, throw the apron back on and even things out. Could he send me on merry way and put another ass in the seat and make himself more money? Sure! But their attention to detail is what separates these guys and why I keep coming back.

Also, every cut is finished with a straight razor and a vibrating shoulder massage. I always walk out feeling great and someone inevitably asks me “who is your barber?” I proudly tell them “Sweeney Todd’s”. – Steve D.

Shorty’s Barber Shop

4 stars– 158 reviews

Renowned as the place where Adam Levine gets his haircut, Shorty’s Barber Shop is popular with celebrities like Daniel Craig, David Arquette, and Henry Rollins as well as lesser-known Angelenos. This award-winning shop and LA favorite is an all-inclusive experience that caters to men and women for every hair texture and style.

The open garage location has a cool and retro-influenced atmosphere with experienced and attentive barbers and stylists whether you’re a walk-in or make an appointment. They also feature a high end product lines, including Shorty’s products, that make it easy to reproduce your fresh style at home.

[new_royalslider id=”43″]

There’s no place else in LA I trust with my hair!

Simple as that…I always walk out of there happy with what they do. And, if I ever have a question or concern over the way a look is going, the guys doing hair there are cool about it. They listen, make suggestions and work with me to make sure I’m happy with the outcome.

Price wise, it’s competitive with other places and I love the vibe of this place. There’s no attitude waiting for you. I know some people can worry about having a different person cut their hair each time, but I have to say that no matter who’s chair I’ve sat in, they’ve always done a great job. – K S.

Shorty’s has an amazing vibe, energy and staff. I have been looking for a meticulous “on point” barber/stylist and Rick is the best. He listened, analyzed and spent a great deal of time on my cut. They have a great selection of products and the hot clientele doesn’t hurt either! I’ll def be back! – Adam G.

Great vibe, cool mixture of a tattoo parlor feel and classic barber shop, EXCELLENT customer service and EXCELLENT stylists. I have found the place I will be going to from now on. – Bri Y.

George and his team have nailed the barber shop experience. The shop is a bit of a throwback. Super clean, classic decor and top notch barbers/stylists. I’m lucky enough to get in with George every two weeks or so. I even bring my sons in for a fresh cut when they are due.

If you’re looking for a professional cut/style, great experience and good conversation this is your place. – Daniel S.

The Highlights:
– Friendly, engaged staff
– Distinct attention to detail
– Definite bang for your $
– All the entertainment options that you could possibly need during your haircut – Mark V.

A perfect shave. My beard went from vacation scruffy to work day ready. The time was taken with the razor and straight blade to get the job done right. I’ll be back to Jag’s every couple of weeks. – Michael H.

Old Glory Barbershop & Tattoo

4.5 stars – 98 reviews

Temporary haircuts and permanents tattoos, together at last. Old Glory is a refreshing barbershop with the attitude that can be encountered elsewhere (maybe it’s the Venice Beach location). Barber David Martinez gets the most shout outs in reviews but all the barbers are excellent and will shave and sculpt your hair and beard to perfection. Old Glory is also a celebrity spot, frequented by the likes of mixed martial artist Conor McGregor, model, pro skateboarder, and tattoo artist Jimmy Q, retired freestyle motocross, motorcycle racer and current off-road truck racer Carey Hart, Brazilian pro surfer Gabriel Medina, and Green Day’s Mike Dirnt.

[new_royalslider id=”47″]

After walking into Old Glory last year, it’s hard to imagine going anywhere else. The place looks great, the vibe is chill and laid back but friendly, and they even offer you a beer while you wait! But the best thing by far about Old Glory has to be Barber Dave – talk about a man with some skills. Every time Dave cuts my hair I leave satisfied and ready. to. be. seen! With a great personality and an incredible eye for detail, this dude is worth hunting down for sure. – Carsten D.

Overall great place and I’d highly recommend it to chill guys looking for a down to earth place to get a high quality cut and/or a shave and have a great time in the process.

There have been a few changes around Old Glory, and those changes are for the better. Yes the vibe is great, it is a neighborhood spot, open and welcoming to anyone that walks in the door, but by no means does it have a locals only vibe.

So the haircut is $30, and I feel that I get that every time I come through, damn sure better than the chain barbershops that herd you in and out in under 30 minutes. Yes it is a barbershop in Venice, and it feels like it, but it is a clean crisp spot that has a free beer, great conversation and amazing barbers.

Haven’t been? Try it. Haven’t been in a while?? Try it again.

I don’t work for them or have a close tie with the shop, just believe in how good I look every time I leave. – Chris T.

1716 Main St, Venice – (855) 554-5679

Vinny’s Barber Shop

5 stars – 95 reviews

Vinny’s is your classic barbershop with 6 chairs, vintage decor, and a jocular, sometimes loud, atmosphere. It’s not all about having fun though. The place is clean and staffed with impeccable professionals who know how to cut, style, and shave all types of hair. Enjoy the Robohands shoulder massage that comes with every cut.

[new_royalslider id=”40″]

This is it. I found the world’s best barbershop. This place was crafted to perfection. Omar (the owner) did a great job of assembling a great team and an amazing environment for men to come hang, talk shop and get proper. With Johnny cash playing in the background, and the complimentary beers and whiskey that flow, you get good looking in no time.

Vinny’s is in great shape and is very CLEAN. Even when I went into the bathroom, I was astonished by how a place that’s frequented by men 95% of the time was that darn clean. – Nareg K.

Their sign reads “Quick haircut? Yea right Buddy”

They take this art very seriously and it shows, from the cuts to the atmosphere.

Angel even styled me up fresh before I left his chair, and threw me some tips on how to style my stubborn hair. – Justin K.

If I could give these guys 10 stars it wouldn’t be enough!

I just have to say that the level of attention and customer service is way beyond my first impression of Vinny’s. These guys really go the extra mile to ensure that not only are you happy as a customer but make sure you have a stellar experience. Its never been my style to fawn over any establishment but if you are not going here for a haircut you are sorely missing out.  – Dean Y. with 21 check-ins

852 N Virgil Ave, Los Angeles – (323) 426-9536

Hector the Barber

5 stars – 125 reviews

When you find a barber with 5 star reviews and zero social media presence, you know he’s good. Hector the Barber doesn’t have a website, Facebook page, or Instagram account yet he’s topped the LA barber list on Yelp for years.

A little bit of a different listing, this is for Hector the Barber himself.

[new_royalslider id=”42″]

Everyone on here gives a 5-star review…and for good reason. Hector is professional and VERY thorough. You can tell that he takes pride in what he does. No mater how many people may be waiting in line, you can be assure that he will take the time to give you a great cut. Thanks, Hector. Add me to your list of repeat customers! – Miguel V.

Those of you who want the perfect “MAD MEN” haircut or clean fade, trust me Hector is by far the BEST in LA! As a bonus you get a “happy ending…” come see what I mean! – Gustavo G.

Hector gives the best haircuts in the world. He’s the hair miracle on Vermont. I came back from deployment with a raggedy look and he changed me into a proper gentleman. The massage after each hair cut is priceless. He’s quite inexpensive for the quality and level of service he provides. I recommend him to any one who wants a great haircut. – Amar E.
